The 1891 Society of the NorthShore Foundation

This year is momentous. NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore), Swedish Hospital, Northwest Community Healthcare (NHC) and Edward-Elmhurst Health are combining the best we have across our entire enterprise to become one healthcare community and one team. We’re aligning cultures, systems, processes and our shared passion for good health and wellbeing. Every team, including the NorthShore Foundation, is working diligently toward reflecting and implementing this broader and deeper reach in serving our communities. Philanthropy will play a vital role in our continued success on all fronts through myriad ways for donors to partner with us on our exciting journey toward realizing our vision to be the most trusted and indispensable health partner throughout the communities we serve.

NorthShore Foundation’s 1891 Society is named for the founding year of Evanston Hospital, when the region’s early visionaries’ benevolence and volunteerism helped create the community-based healthcare that benefits our communities today. 1891 Society members, who have committed future gifts to NorthShore, are dedicated to this shared vision of community health and wellbeing—their legacy.

Amanda Patten

Amanda Louisa Buchanan Patten

NorthShore was founded as Evanston Emergency Hospital through acts of volunteerism and financial generosity with the mission to serve the medical needs of the poor. In its early years, the hospital operated almost exclusively for charity patients. At that time, no benevolent volunteer donor had a greater impact on the financial stability and survival of the young and precarious hospital than the young Amanda Louisa Buchanan Patten. She adopted the hospital as her principal charity and encouraged her husband James A. Patten, who had made a Chicago-based fortune in the grain market, to join her in her gift-giving. Amanda, her husband James and his brother, George W. Patten, made up the annual deficit, underwrote medical care for the poor, helped purchase real estate to enable hospital expansion, contributed to new construction and provided resources for the School of Nursing for many decades. Mrs. Patten served on the Board of Directors from 1898 until her death in 1935, acting as vice president for 30 of those years. She formed the first Women’s Auxiliary and was particularly devoted to the wellbeing of the student nurses. John L. Patten, her son, walked in her footsteps, continuing their rich family legacy of support for the hospital to the present day and beyond with a perpetual charitable gift that provides ongoing funding for NorthShore’s progress, growth and patient care today.

Charitable gifts often result in tangible outcomes almost immediately. However, the true impact of a generous life lived may not be fully realized for many years. Amanda Patten was driven by a heartfelt vision and invested in that future. She would be gratified and amazed by today’s NorthShore, her legacy. NorthShore recognizes and celebrates the donors who have named NorthShore University HealthSystem as a beneficiary of their hopes and charitable legacies for the future.

We are extremely grateful for these committed partners, whose philanthropic support creates such a powerful impact on the lives of our patients and their families.
